PRESS RELEASE: LEGENDARY SURF FILMMAKER SONNY MILLER’S MEMORIAL PADDLEOUT.
10-26-2014 SOLANA BEACH, CA – Legendary filmmaker, Sonny Miller will be honored at a memorial paddle-out on Sunday, October 26th at 1:00 PM at Seaside Reef at Cardiff State Park. At 4:00 pm there will a gathering at the Tidewater Tavern, Solana Beach to celebrate his life. Sonny and his mother, Suzanne Gilliland’s ashes will be spread in the ocean at the paddle-out. Suzanne passed away six days before Sonny. Bring your surfboard, SUP, and aloha in celebration. Sonny was one of the great filmmakers and photographers in the history of surfing. He was also an innovator in early skateboarding and snowboarding photography. He grew up skateboarding and riding waves along the beaches of North County San Diego in the early 80s. His career began at Surfer Magazine as a photography in the mid 80’s, but quickly moved from stills to motion photography. In the late 80’s to early 90’s Sonny hosted and filmed Surfer Magazine TV for ESPN.
In the mid-1990’s Sonny produced a series of influential surf films for Rip Curl, including “The Search,” “Beyond The Boundaries”, and most famously, “Searching For Tom Curren”, which was named Video of the Year by Surfer Magazine in 1997. In the early 2000s he transitioned into Hollywood productions, brining his action- sports cinematography skills to the movies, “In Gods Hands”, “Riding Giants”, “Lords of Dogtown”, “Blue Crush”, “Die Another Day”, “Chasing Mavericks” and the remake of “Point Break”. Sonny was nicknamed, “Cap’n Fun” by those who spent time traveling and working with him. Come celebrate his life and his contribution to the surfing culture on October 26th.
Unscripted words spoken by Sonny Miller’s close friend Philip Boston setup the videos revealing storyline in a beautiful way. Ben Howards Lyrics to his song “Promise” was the Inspirational music that bookends this tribute video…and Mike Prickett’s generous statements about “Best Friends” defines a feeling that Everyone had for Sonny. Thank You, Ebb Bakkela for making that very special urn for Sonny…and to you Robbie Rodriguez for getting The Bus to the memorial, the center piece of the ceremony, and of course thanks to Jenny Carmel for making such an amazing delicious cake for everyone to enjoy much Mahalos.
This video was made to celebrate the life and friendships of Sonny Miller….and to thank everyone that contributed to his Paddle Out Memorial. It became something special as you will see. I purposely let the paddle out ceremony play out void of voice overs and sound effects…so that you can refelect on Sonny in your own way. I hope you find comfort…Much Mahalos for watching…..Ron Condon and Family
